12months prescribing information -28th January 2026
Kia Ora-Murihiku Medical Services patients,
We are writing to let you know about 12-month (annual) prescriptions and when they may be used at our practice.
What is a 12-month prescription?
From February 1 2026, GPs will be able to prescribe some medicines for up to 12 months, instead of the current three. This national change aims to make it easier for people to access their regular medicines.
For some patients with stable, long-term conditions, on some medications, your clinician may be able to issue a prescription that covers up to 12 months of treatment. This does not usually mean receiving 12 months of medication at once. Instead, the prescription is authorized for a year and your pharmacy supplies your medicines at regular intervals (most likely to be 3 monthly), as usual, but you will only be charged at the start for the prescription.
Regular reviews are important to check your medicine is working, that you’re not having side effects, and to pick up early signs of other health issues. Safety and continuity of care come first. When you are asked to come in for your regular review for your medication, the consultation will only be for this. If your condition changes or you experience side effects, please contact us promptly—do not wait until your next review. It is important to note that 12month prescriptions are at the prescriber’s clinical discretion.
Who may be suitable?
A 12-month prescription may be considered if:
● Your condition is stable and well controlled eg. stable asthma, contraception, underactive thyroid, high cholesterol
● Your medication and dose are unlikely to change and there have been no recent dose changes
● There are no safety concerns or monitoring that require more frequent checks Your clinician will decide if this option is appropriate for you.
When would it not be used?
A 12-month prescription is not suitable if:
● Your medication needs frequent adjustment
● Multiple medical conditions or significant frailty
● You are starting a new medicine or have a new diagnosis
● Poorly controlled medical condition(s)
● Regular blood tests or close monitoring are required
● There are concerns about side effects, interactions, or adherence
● Controlled medications - eg opiates, benzodiazepines (Misuse of Drugs act is different)
Reviews and safety
Even with a 12-month prescription, you will still be invited for regular medication reviews and health checks when needed. If your condition changes or you experience side effects, please contact us promptly—do not wait until your next review.
How will I know if this applies to me?
Your GP, nurse, or pharmacist will discuss this with you if you are suitable. You can also ask about 12-month prescriptions at your next medication review.
If you have any questions or concerns about your medicines, please contact the practice.
Kind regards,
Murihiku Medical Services
Kia Ora Whanau,
